Happenings- MLK Day of Service

On Monday, January 15th we will have coffee and muffins in the social hall from 11A.M.-1P.M. and have the opportunity to be of service to our larger community.

There are several options available:

The United Way is sponsoring a weekend of service with a variety of opportunities at a number of different locations from January 12th-15th. In Vancouver some of the options are to help sort books for the Fort Vancouver Book Sale (ages 8+), pull ivy at Blandford Canyon (6+), and work on a painting project at the YWCA Shelter. This link takes you to the United Way sign up page and shows the full list of options throughout Vancouver, Portland and the surrounding area.  Go to: https://www.handsonportland.org/special-event/a0M1H00000UlPxeUAF

Here in the building we will have a Kvetch and Stitch group with the Rabbi for those who knit and crochet or who are ready to learn for a cause.

We will be making hats for preemies and scarves for Winter Hospitality Overflow clients. We have a VERY limited supply of yarn, so please bring whatever you can share as well as knitting needles and crochet hooks. This will be a fun way to learn, socialize, and give for those who are old enough to manage knitting needles/crochet hooks on their own.

We will also be putting together care kits for homeless people. After putting these together, people will be able to take some with them to keep in their cars and distribute. We are seeking donated items for these kits. We need: gallon zip-lock bags, socks, cans of tuna (the kind that don’t need an opener!), granola or cereal bars, wipes, tissues, tampons and/or pads, toothbrushes and toothpaste, band aids, chapstick, gum or mints, fast food gift cards, etc. You could also donate funds to help us purchase items to include in the kits. This will be a fun activity for families and should not be too time consuming.

Additionally, for those who can’t get enough of fleece blanket making, we have a limited amount of leftover materials that would be great to turn into some winter warmth for someone.

And, as always, we will be participating a re-pack at the Clark County Food Bank from 1-3. Please meet there: 6502 NE 47th Ave, Vancouver.

Please sign up (and let us know if you will be bringing stitching materials or items for care kits) at this link: http://signup.com/go/GQdYqXc. It will be great to know how many to plan for… and please, if you are going to do one of the off-site options let us know and join us for coffee and muffins!
